Creating a video that informs production staff members of safety measurements
Following the success of the Visitor Induction Video, DTP commissioned a second production focused on the induction and training of on-site operational staff.
As one of Africa’s leading open-cast mining operators, they manage large-scale, complex operations that rely on precision, safety, and coordination.
The Production Induction Video was designed to communicate critical safety protocols specific to production environments, where employees work directly with heavy machinery, blasting operations, and high-risk zones. The video combined AI-generated voice-over narration, on-site b-roll, and 3D accident recreation to deliver a powerful and practical safety communication tool.
Project Objectives
The primary goal was to develop an informative production induction video that would serve as a mandatory part of their onboarding and continuous training processes for site personnel.
Key objectives included:
- Operational Safety: Educate staff on safe working practices in active mining zones, focusing on large equipment, blasting areas, and maintenance operations.
- Hazard Awareness: Use realistic 3D recreations to visualise potential accidents and unsafe behaviours around heavy machinery.
- Procedural Clarity: Reinforce step-by-step protocols for entering work zones, operating equipment, and responding to site emergencies.
- Consistency: Employ an AI-generated voice-over for clear and uniform messaging across multilingual teams.
- Reinforcement of Culture: Strengthen their commitment to safety, performance, and teamwork through visually engaging storytelling.

Creative Process
Concept and Development
Building on the structure of the Visitor Induction Video, this production focused on in-depth operational safety, targeting employees who interact daily with the mine’s machinery and systems.
The concept emphasised real-world situational awareness, helping workers visualize risks before encountering them on site.
The video narrative was structured to follow a worker’s typical day, covering:
- Arrival and Site Access: Safety checks, PPE compliance, and shift readiness.
- Work Environment Overview: Introduction to key zones, loading areas, blasting zones, and haul roads.
- Machinery Safety: Safe distance protocols around excavators, dump trucks, and dozers.
- Common Hazards: Using 3D recreations to demonstrate blind spots, tipping hazards, and equipment interaction points.
- Emergency Response: Procedures for alarms, evacuations, and first-response protocols.
Design, Filming, and Animation
Filming:
Our production team captured high-quality b-roll footage directly from operational sites, showcasing large-scale machinery in action, from drill and blast operations to load and haul sequences. These visuals established authenticity and helped viewers connect theoretical safety concepts with the actual working environment.
3D Accident Recreation:
Realistic 3D simulations were integrated throughout the video to visualize key safety scenarios, such as:
- Equipment collisions due to poor visibility or failure to maintain exclusion zones.
- Incorrect use of machinery during loading and unloading.
- Unsafe pedestrian movement near operating vehicles.
- Potential rollovers and mechanical failures.
Each recreation contrasted unsafe actions with the correct procedures, reinforcing best practices in a visually impactful way.
Design and Visuals:
- The animation followed a realistic industrial style, mirroring their operational environment and branding.
- Key safety messages were highlighted through animated callouts and motion graphics overlays.
- Branded colors and iconography maintained consistency with DTP’s corporate identity.
AI Voice-over and Sound Design
The AI-generated voice-over provided a consistent, professional tone suitable for multilingual delivery across operations. The voice guided viewers through complex procedures with clarity, ensuring full comprehension across diverse teams.

Execution
The final edit combined real-world footage, 3D animations, and on-screen safety diagrams to create a comprehensive training sequence. Each scene was carefully timed to align visual demonstrations with narration, ensuring maximum understanding.
Transitions between real and simulated environments were seamless, providing both credibility and clarity. The pacing allowed for reflection on key points, from equipment awareness to emergency procedures, ensuring that the video could serve as both an induction resource and a refresher training module.
Results
The completed Production Induction Video provided them with a versatile, high-impact safety communication tool, designed to enhance understanding and compliance among operational staff.
Key outcomes included:
- Improved Awareness: Workers gained a clearer understanding of the risks and procedures involved in working with large machinery.
- Training Consistency: The AI-narrated structure ensured that all employees received the same safety message, regardless of site or language.
- Stronger Engagement: The mix of on-site visuals and 3D recreations made the learning experience memorable and relatable.
- Cultural Alignment: Reinforced their values of safety, discipline, and local empowerment through authentic storytelling.
Conclusion
The DTP Production Induction Video demonstrates how the fusion of on-site realism, 3D accident recreation, and AI-driven narration can create a powerful learning experience in high-risk industrial environments.
By merging real operations footage with educational animation, the project brings DTP’s safety standards to life, ensuring every employee understands the procedures, risks, and responsibilities that keep them and their colleagues safe.
