Motion Graphics – Time usage model

Creating a Motion Graphics Video to Showcase a new model for  time management at a mine.

Anglo American, a global leader in mining and sustainable development, commissioned us to create a motion graphics explainer video for their new Time Usage Model (TUM) at Kumba Mine. The initiative forms part of Anglo American’s broader goal to enhance operational efficiency, improve safety, and create shared value within the communities surrounding their mining operations.

The purpose of the video was to clearly explain how the Time Usage Model helps teams measure, manage, and optimise mining activity, ensuring maximum productivity while maintaining the company’s core values of safety, sustainability, and positive legacy creation.

The final product was a clean, professional, and technically accurate motion graphics video, featuring upbeat background music and a confident male voice-over guiding viewers through each stage of the new model.

Project Objectives

The primary goal was to introduce and explain the new Time Usage Model (TUM) to Anglo American’s operational teams and stakeholders in a way that was both educational and visually engaging.

Key objectives included:

  • Clarity and Consistency: Illustrate how the TUM standardises measurement and reporting across Anglo American’s surface mining operations.
  • Operational Efficiency: Visually demonstrate how the new model helps identify and reduce downtime, streamline processes, and achieve higher production targets.
  • Safety and Sustainability: Reinforce their commitment to operating responsibly, protecting the environment, and safeguarding people.
  • Community Impact: Highlight the company’s ongoing focus on creating lasting, positive change in and around Kumba Mine.
  • Accessible Learning: Deliver complex operational concepts in a way that is easy for all employees and partners to understand, regardless of their technical background.

Creative Process

  • Client Collaboration
Our team worked closely with their operational and communications departments to understand the technical structure of the TUM and how it fits into their broader Burning Ambition” and Tswelopele initiatives. These discussions were essential in ensuring that the animation would accurately represent both the engineering precision and the human values behind the program.

  • Research and Storyboarding
We studied the existing TUM framework and the ways it measures performance across mining activities such as drilling, loading, hauling, and maintenance. Using this information, we developed a storyboard and visual flow that logically guided the viewer from the problem (inefficiencies in time tracking) to the solution (a unified, data-driven model).
The storyboard integrated infographics, cycle diagrams, and animated equipment icons to visually map mining processes, delays, and productivity opportunities.

  • Design and Animation
The motion graphics design followed their corporate identity, a clean layout built around their signature blue and beige palette, supported by geometric line illustrations symbolising topographic mapping and precision.
Each graphic element, from icons of trucks and shovels to alarm-clock motifs, was animated to represent movement, time, and workflow efficiency.
The visuals maintained a professional corporate aesthetic while staying dynamic and easy to follow. A combination of animated charts, value driver trees, and process loops helped visualize the model’s core functions, measuring productive vs. unproductive activities and identifying improvement areas.

  • Voice-over and Sound Design
The video featured a male professional voice-over, chosen for his authoritative yet approachable tone, ensuring clarity across diverse audiences. His narration provided a step-by-step explanation of how TUM supports both daily operations and long-term performance goals.
To complement the voice-over, we incorporated upbeat, modern background music that conveyed forward momentum and optimism. This audio tone underscored Anglo American’s commitment to progress, innovation, and community-focused mining.

Execution

During production, the emphasis was on accuracy, pacing, and engagement.
Each animated segment was timed precisely to align with the narration, ensuring that key visuals, such as the Value Driver Tree, Shovel Cycle Diagram, and Major TUM Changes, appeared at moments of explanation for maximum comprehension.

The transitions were designed to maintain energy while keeping focus on clarity,  using clean wipes, zooms, and data transitions that mirrored operational precision.

Client Review and Refinement

We collaborated closely with Anglo American’s communications team through multiple review stages, refining elements such as iconography accuracy, text clarity, and animation speed.
Final refinements included colour balancing, subtitle integration, and audio adjustments to ensure the finished product met both the company’s technical standards and brand tone.

Results

The final motion graphics video was rolled out as an internal communication and training tool, successfully simplifying a complex operational concept into a visually clear, engaging, and informative format.

Key outcomes included:

  • Improved Understanding: Staff across departments gained a clear grasp of the TUM and its importance in performance measurement.
  • Operational Alignment: The video helped standardise communication about time usage across teams and departments.
  • Enhanced Engagement: The use of motion graphics and upbeat narration kept employees attentive and motivated during onboarding and training sessions.
  • Brand Consistency: The animation reinforced their visual identity and values of safety, sustainability, and excellence.

Conclusion

This project exemplifies how motion graphics can effectively bridge technical content and operational understanding within large industrial organisations.

Through clear design, strategic animation, and precise narration, the TUM explainer video brought Anglo American’s innovation in mining management to life, promoting a culture of efficiency, safety, and shared growth.

By translating complex systems into accessible visuals, the final product not only educated employees but also reinforced Anglo American’s dedication to responsible mining and lasting community impact.
