Mamba Cement is a cement production company located in Northam, Limpopo Province, South Africa. They operate a state-of-the-art cement plant with the latest technology and energy efficiency. Their products include bagged and bulk cement for typical building applications.
Mamba Cement places high importance on health and safety in their operations. In line with this commitment, Mamba Cement commissioned us, Oliver Karstel, to create a health and safety video that would be shown to all employees, visitors, and contractors. The video aimed to raise awareness of the potential hazards in the workplace and demonstrate best practices to prevent accidents and injuries. In this project write-up, we will discuss the process of producing the health and safety video, its impact on employee behavior, and key takeaways for future projects.
We provided Mamba Cement with a comprehensive video production service tailored to their specific needs. Our services included scriptwriting, filming, drone and drone operator, voice recording, use of professional voice artists, editing, motion graphics, and consultation. To ensure a high-quality product, we utilised one of our experienced voice artists who recorded the narration in our in-house recording studio. As the production required some on-location filming, we coordinated with the Mamba Cement team to facilitate travel arrangements. This allowed us to streamline the entire process to maximise our resources and create a top-tier health and safety video production.
A well-produced health and safety video can have a significant impact on employees when produced correctly. Firstly, these videos create a consistent message that is unified across the organisation—meaning employees will be taught the same safety regulations and guidelines, and there will be no inconsistencies. When there is a standard, it’s easier to train employees more effectively, and they are more likely to retain what they’ve learned. A consistent message also enables employees to feel confident that they are all on the same page, and there will be no confusion or misunderstanding.
Secondly, the use of well-produced health and safety videos can lead to increased employee engagement. Workers’ interest in the video can lead them to ask questions, make comments, and share their experiences, which fosters collaboration and a shared commitment to the safety of the workplace. Moreover, the best safety training videos are created with the participation of employees, and this collaborative approach fosters teamwork and a sense of shared responsibility for safety within the workplace.
Thirdly, well-produced health and safety videos help companies save money by reducing the number of accident-related losses and insurance claims. The cost of workplace incidents, through lost productivity, legal fees, and damage to a company’s reputation, can run into millions, even billions of dollars. With the use of these videos, employees take safety precautions seriously, and this means fewer accidents and fewer costs.
Fourthly, well-produced health and safety videos can help improve the company’s image and reputation. When a business prioritises employee safety and implements essential safety measures, employees trust and respect the organisation. There are also potential benefits to the business’s brand image, with better safety records leading to more job applications and increased customer loyalty.
